I work as a security officer providing security services at a retail shop in a shopping centre and I have been working with Kingfisher SEC for 3 years. I am a qualified and licenced security officer with SIA ID card for Door Supervision and CCTV.
What it means to be a Retail Security Guard
In my job as a retail security guard, I must look after the store, be present and supervise the opening and closing of the store and keep an eye on the goods. I regularly patrol the shop floor, check staff bags, and sometimes deal with aggressive customers as well as shoplifters, provide shoplifting reports and unfortunately sometimes intoxicated people entering the shop.
My main task is to always observe the CCTV and spot any potential wrongdoing.
As a security officer you really must be 100% certain that the person you are about to stop has the unpaid goods on them, or things can go quickly downhill. You have to write a statement and with wrongful detention of a person, you risk losing your SIA licence and following that, also your job.
Retail security work is not easy, but it is a very good position to gain experience, new skills and achieve goals in your everyday job. I have been training lots of licensed security guards in this store and managing situations and different work scenarios myself.
UK Security Services in the Retail Industry
Unfortunately, we know that with pandemic, non- essential shops closed, but luckily Kingfisher SEC, the security guarding company I work for, has put me on Furlough. I ate way too much food, enjoyed catching up on TV and movies as well as plenty of sleep. It was relaxing and reassuring to know I didn’t have a massive loss of income because of it.
I am very happy to be back at work and seeing all my colleagues at the retail store again, however, we are not out of the woods yet, as for one, the store opening times are shorter now.
